Worry Is A Wasteful Sin

Elizabeth Cheney poem entitled Overheard *In An Orchard:*

Said the Robin to the Sparrow:
*I should really like to know
Why these anxious human beings
Rush about and worry so?*

Said the Sparrow to the Robin:
*Friend, I think that it must be
That they have no heavenly Father
Such as cares for you and me.*

Your Daily Devotional:

The act of hope is so much more enjoyable than the act of worrying. And yet it*s often so much easier to mull over our worries than to think about the hope God offers us.

An anonymous quote declares:

Blessed is the person who is too busy to worry in the daytime, and too sleepy to worry at night.

Unknown:

Maybe if we busy our minds with meditating on the goodness of God and how we can serve Him, we*ll have less mental energy to worry.

William Osler:

The load of tomorrow, added to those of yesterday carried today, makes the strongest falter.

Oswald Chambers on Psalm 37:8: Fret not thyself, it tendeth only to evil doing.:

Fretting means getting out at elbows mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say *Fret not,* but a very different thing to have such a disposition that you find yourself able not to fret. It sounds so easy to talk about *resting in the Lord* and *waiting patiently for Him* until the next upset, until we live, as so many are doing, in tumult and anguish; is it possible then to rest in the Lord? This *don*t* must work in days of perplexity as well as in days of peace, or it never will work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work in anyone else*s case. Resting in the Lord does not depend on external circumstances at all, but on your relationship to God Himself.

Fussing always ends in sin. We imagine that a little anxiety and worry are an indication of how really wise we are; it is much more an indication of how really wicked we are. Fretting springs from a determination to get our own way. Our Lord never worried and He was never anxious, because He was not *out* to realize His own ideas; He was *out* to realize God*s ideas. Fretting is wicked if you are a child of God.

Have you been bolstering up that stupid soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God? Put all *supposing* on one side and dwell in the shadow of the Almighty. Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about that thing. All our fret and worry is caused by calculating without God.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon*s Devotional on 1 Peter 5:7: Casting all your care upon him; for He careth for you.

It is a happy way of soothing sorrow when we can feel . . . HE careth for me. Christian! Do not dishonour religion by always wearing a brow of care; come, cast your burden upon your Lord. You are staggering beneath a weight which your Father would not feel. What seems to you a crushing burden, would be to Him but as the small dust of the balance. Nothing is so sweet as to

Lie passive in God*s hands,
And know no will but His.

O child of suffering, be thou patient; God has not passed thee over in His providence. He who is the feeder of sparrows, will also furnish you with what you need. Sit not down in despair; hope on, hope ever. Take up the arms of faith against a sea of trouble, and your opposition shall yet end your distresses. There is One who careth for you. His eye is fixed on you, His heart beats with pity for your woe, and his hand omnipotent shall yet bring you the needed help. The darkest cloud shall scatter itself in showers of mercy. The blackest gloom shall give place to the morning. He, if thou art one of His family, will bind up thy wounds, and heal thy broken heart. Doubt not His grace because of thy tribulation, but believe that He loveth thee as much in seasons of trouble as in times of happiness. What a serene and quiet life might you lead if you would leave providing to the God of providence! With a little oil in the cruse, and a handful of meal in the barrel, Elijah outlived the famine, and you will do the same. If God cares for you, why need you care too? Can you trust Him for your soul, and not for your body? He has never refused to bear your burdens, He has never fainted under their weight. Come, then, soul! Have done with fretful care, and leave all thy concerns in the hand of a gracious God.
